Oct 26, 2011 · I think it may be the "80W-90" spec vs the "75W-90" weight but Mobil told me it was the amount of friction modifier which may be true. Last edited: Oct 26, 2011 GIockGuy24 , Oct 26, 2011

90 wt. gear oil, including 75W-90 has a hot viscosity range @ 100°C of 13.5 to 24 centiStokes. 140 wt. has a 100°C viscosity range of 24 to 41 centiStokes. Again more less-than-meaningful numbers, but note that there is a range of viscosities and that 140 might be much thicker than 90 when hot.

The idea that heavier oils handle heat better does not figure into gear oil selection. With gear oils, we have issues like latent heat transfer and such to deal with. 85w-140 transfers heat MUCH slower (because it flows slower) than 75w-140 causing more heat build-up. 75w-90 is even better and will bring diff temps down further, but it does not provide the shock loading properties that our rear ends require. In my '06 4X4 I replaced all the factory oil at 6800 miles. The rear diff oil came out dirty and the magnet was caked. I used Redline 75W90 GL5 in the rear and front diff and transfer case. Just recently at 38K miles (over 7 years later) I changed the rear diff with the same. The oil came out clean and the magnet was barely coated.

For full replacement use SAE 140 or SAE 85W-140 gear oil with an API rating of GL-4 only. We have also found that 80W-90 oil with an API rating of GL-1 is acceptable for both partial and full replacement of tiller gear oils. We have 80W-90 lubricant available (12 quart case) at our Online Parts Store as part number 737-04040. I now use Mobil-1 0W-20 for most general clock work. I sometimes use Nye-140 synthetic for tiny pivots. I not sure how 0W-20 compares to 0W-40 at room temperature. I've had good luck with Mobil-1 75W-90 gear oil on main springs but I think any heavy weight synthetic oil is fine for main springs.

If anyone knows for sure, or has any real-world experience with 75w-140 synthetic, I'd love to hear about it, because I would hate to have to dump out $100 worth of perfectly good synthetic gear oil (or wreck a prefectly good rearend) just because I was stupid. 80W-90. 85W-90. The viscosity range of the synthetic gear oil are a little different. 75W-90. 75W-140 (I don't recommend this oil because its to far outside the range of the specified weight of oil. You can use either the synthetic or crude type in your Shadow's final drive. Jun 03, 2011 · After nearly half hour or reading gearbox oil threads i am still stumped as to what gearbox oil to put into my 1*2. I have read replys on threads from Cs users saying to use nothing other than 75w80 (Castrol EPX oil etc) as the gearboxes are sensitive and other people replying to say 75w90 (Millers and Comma oil etc) is fine.
Classic Gear EP 90 is a medium SAE 90 transmission oil with extreme pressure protection for use in classic transmissions. The standards that modern lubricants are required to meet mean that modern-day transmission oils are often of low viscosity and are significantly less suitable, or unsuitable, for use in the transmissions of classic vehicles.

So I recently had my rear end upgraded with strange axles, c clip eliminators, and a eaton truetrac. I know there is some mis-information about what type of gear oil you should run for a truetrac, but the consensus is that it should be free of friction modifier.

Dec 15, 2020 · Hypoid gear oil or synthetic oil, both have individual priorities. Both are well enough in their features, but the difference arises mainly in the application.
